Kenya School of Law (KSL) Student Governing Council President Joshua Okayo, who was reportedly abducted by police in June at the peak of the anti-finance bill protests, is asking Kenyans for help.

In a statement on Wednesday, September 25, Okayo revealed he has undergone multiple medical checkups since his abduction which showed that he had internal bruises.

He also mentioned that he continues to experience pain in his left arm, particularly on cold mornings.

“Dear Kenyans, on June 26th, I was abducted, leading to a traumatic experience that left me unconscious for some time. I was found on June 28th by the bank of River Maragua, and since then, I’ve had multiple medical checkups,” he said.

Joshua Okayo Asks Kenyans for Help

Okayo said that even though he is feeling stronger, he is unable to cater for his medical expenses to undergo physiotherapy sessions, pain management and psychosocial therapy calling upon Kenyans to chip in.

“Now, I’m seeking further treatment, but the financial burden of my medical costs is overwhelming. I’m reaching out for support from my community, and any help would mean a lot to me,” said Okayo.

Okayo Recounts Experience at the Hands of Abductors

In an emotional interview on July 9, Joshua narrated how he was abducted and tortured during the anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi by unidentified individuals who drove him to an unknown location.

According to Okayo, his predicaments stemmed from a statement he issued in response to the abduction of two Kenya School of Law students in his capacity as the leader of the governing council.

“The day before, I was told that people were looking for me because two students from the Kenya School of law had been abducted at 5am in the morning but they were later found. I had issued a statement as the governing council,” he said.

Okayo also revealed that he was abducted on his way to greet people he thought were students at the KSL.

He would, however, encounter a group of middle-aged men who arrested him and led him to a waiting vehicle.  The unidentified men then handcuffed him and tied a blindfold on his eyes as the vehicle drove off.

Joshua also recalled reality dawning on him after the abductors escorted him to the room and left without saying a word before coming back to torture him and interrogate him more.

He further revealed that when the abductees came back, they started hitting him on his ankles with a metallic object while asking him questions on the real financiers of the protests.

The student leader said that when they came for the final time, they walked him to a car and drove for about two hours. All this time, the abductors tortured him by strangulation and hitting his chest, ankles and legs.

“Then they later threw me off a moving vehicle. I just felt I’ve been thrown, I fell down and rolled and when I stopped, I kept quiet, I didn’t move or leave. I didn’t look up because I didn’t have energy to do anything,” added Okayo.
