Kenyan Showmax subscribers will be affected as MultiChoice Group announced it will discontinue the streaming platform following what the company described as a comprehensive review of the service.
In a statement on March 5, MultiChoice indicated that the persistent annual losses from Showmax made the service unsustainable, leading to the decision to wind it down.
“MultiChoice, part of CANAL+ SA (LSE: CAN, the “Company” or the “Group”), the global media and entertainment company, today announces the forthcoming discontinuation of the Showmax service, following a comprehensive review of its streaming activities,” read part of the statement.
The group explained that the decision is also part of a broader strategy to strengthen its digital offerings and ensure long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming market.
However, the company did not specify an exact date for the shutdown.
MultiChoice Announces Plans to Shut Down Showmax
In a message sent to subscribers, Showmax said there will be no interruption to current services, and subscribers can continue streaming as usual without taking any action.
“Importantly, at the moment there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time,” the company stated.
MultiChoice Group has confirmed that the planned discontinuation of Showmax will not involve any retrenchments.
The company said it will engage employees and provide support through various transition options.

CANAL+ will continue investing in premium content, technological innovation, and strategic partnerships to strengthen its leadership in the African entertainment market.
The company added that further details on expanded content offerings and platform upgrades will be shared in due course, reassuring Showmax subscribers that they remain a priority as services evolve to deliver a superior streaming experience.
