Students at Kitui School were sent home on Sunday, June 7, following overnight unrest at the institution, with reports indicating that some learners were left stranded in Kitui Town due to a lack of transport fare.
Kitui School announced the closure and release of students after unrest broke out at the institution on the night of June 6, 2026.
In a message to parents and guardians, Principal Mutua B. M. said the disturbance occurred at 11:41 p.m., prompting a decision to release students from the school on June 7.
“We hope you are well. We inform you that last night, 6/6/2026 at 11.41 pm, there was unrest in the school,” the statement read in part.
Kitui School Closed After Night Unrest
The school assured parents that all students were safe and had been accounted for following the incident. The Kitui School administration said additional guidelines would be communicated later.
“It was agreed that we release the students today, 7/6/2026. All students are safe and accounted for,” the school principal informed.
Following the abrupt release, reports emerged that students were scattered across Kitui Town as they sought transport home. Some were reportedly stranded due to insufficient fare.
3 More Schools Shut Down After Unrest
In a separate incident, panic gripped Agoro Sare National School after a major fire broke out on the afternoon of June 6, 2026, gutting a student dormitory during a scheduled parents’ visiting day.

Images obtained by The Kenya Times showed thick smoke billowing from the affected area as students scrambled within the school compound.
Preliminary reports indicate the affected dormitory was extensively damaged, while the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
As of June 6, 2026, Nyambaria Boys High School (KCSE 2022 top-performing school) remained tense, with uncertainty continuing to grip the institution.
Students reported anxiety, while school administrators closed the main gate after they reported a fire incident within the school compound.
Security officers increased their presence as administrators moved quickly to contain the situation and restore calm within the institution.
Similarly, Kibabii Boys National School also closed after authorities raised related safety concerns.

Mang’u, Mukumu Girls Among Latest Schools Closed
June 5: At Mangu High School, the administration reportedly noticed that a small group of students attempted to cause unrest on June 4 at around 7.15PM before the situation was contained. The school decided to release the students.
“The BOM, PA and School Administration have agreed that we release all students tomorrow, 5th June at 6:00 am to ease the tension, as a precautionary measure to safeguard the safety of all students. We will issue further communication after releasing students tomorrow. We appreciate your support and prayers as we continue to serve our students,” read part of the message from Mang’u High School.
June 5: Mukumu Girls: “This is to kindly notify you that your daughter (F3’s and F4’s) will be coming home tomorrow Friday5/6/2026 for a brief rest. They will report back on Wednesday 10/6/2026 by 3.00p.m without fail after clearing fees balance for Second Term, 2026. Kindly send your daughter fare for travelling purposes,” said a message to parents.
