Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) employees including nurses, laboratory technicians, interns and subordinate staff have threatened to go on strike on Monday, May 20th, 2024.
While issuing the strike notice, the employees under the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers union maintained that they wanted the 2021/2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) implemented.
Speaking to the press, the Union Secretary General Albert Njeru, called for immediate negotiations between the hospital, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Health before the strike begins.
Failure to sign the CBA, Njeru announced, will leave employees with no options but to down their tools.
“If the Kenyatta National Hospital, the Ministry of Labor and Health will not have resolved our issue by Friday, May 17, then it means the employees, all of them, the nurses, doctors, interns, subordinate staff all of them will not be working on Monday at 7: 00 am,
“All of us will be assembling at our usual place so that our collective bargaining agreement can be negotiated,” he said.

Conditions Issued for Ending Doctors Strike Before KNH Notice
The notice by the KNH workers came a day after the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) announced the end of the nationwide doctors’ strike.
While announcing the end of the 56-day doctor’s strike, the KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atella said that they had signed the return-to-work formula after a series of negotiations.

However, he noted that one of the most important issues, the increase in the salaries of the intern doctors was still pending.
“This matter has been part of the conversations, and we could not come to a particular agreement because the union was for the opinion that doctor interns must be posted immediately as per the CBA while the government was for the opinion that we have to wait for the Court’s mitigation that is ongoing in Eldoret before we come to an agreement,
“All the doctor interns will have to wait a little bit longer. We have agreed on a 60-days period that they will not be posted but we will be having conversations on this issue,” he said.
