The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has clarified an incident involving a Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane at the Port of Mombasa on September 17.
In a statement issued on September 18, KPA said the incident occurred at about 3:40 pm, and its safety and emergency response teams attended immediately.
The Authority said the incident did not result in any fatalities or serious injuries.
According to KPA, the truck tractor operator involved in the incident was unharmed, while the RTG operator sustained minor soft-tissue injuries to the legs.
“KPA confirms that an operational incident involving an RTG occurred and was immediately attended to by the Authority’s safety and emergency response teams in accordance with established procedures,” KPA stated.
KPA Confirms Operator Was Injured
The RTG operator was taken to hospital for a precautionary medical evaluation and was later discharged after treatment and clearance by the attending medical team.

KPA said investigations into the circumstances and cause of the incident are ongoing.
The Authority is conducting a comprehensive review under its safety and incident management protocols to establish what happened and determine whether corrective measures are needed.
KPA said it remains committed to the safety and well-being of employees, stakeholders and port users, as well as maintaining safe, efficient and reliable port operations.
The authority urged the public and stakeholders to get information from its official communication channels and avoid sharing unverified reports that could spread misinformation or cause unnecessary concern.
“KPA appreciates the concern expressed by members of the public and its stakeholders. We urge the public to rely on official KPA communication channels for accurate and verified information and to refrain from sharing unverified reports that may cause unnecessary alarm or misinformation,” read the statement
The clarification comes after reports about the incident circulated on social media.
Footage seen by The Kenya Times after the incident showed stacked containers appearing to topple in the area where the RTG crane was operating, with KPA personnel seen responding at the scene.
Two Die in Kajiado Aircraft Crash
Separately, a flight instructor and his student have died after a training aircraft operated by the Kenya School of Flying crashed in Kipeto, Kajiado West.

The aircraft had the two occupants on board when it crashed, killing the student at the scene.
Kajiado West Police Commander Maureen Kuto said preliminary information indicated that poor weather conditions may have contributed to the accident by making it difficult to maintain control of the aircraft.
The instructor survived the crash but sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital. He later died while receiving treatment.
Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The bodies of the two victims were taken to the mortuary at Kajiado Referral Hospital pending further procedures.
