The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) will award Benson Kangwana an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree (Honoris Causa) during the 13th Graduation Ceremony, scheduled to take place on 26 November 2024.
In a statement, TUK announced that the conferment recognizes Kangwana’s significant contributions to entrepreneurship and the promotion of free and independent media in Kenya.
“The Technical University of Kenya is pleased to announce its intention to confer on Hon. Jared Benson Kangwana an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree (Honoris Causa) during the 13th Graduation Ceremony, scheduled to be held on 26 November 2024.
This conferment is in recognition of Hon. Kangwana’s distinguished contribution to entrepreneurship and a free and independent media in Kenya,” part of the statement read.
Kangwana to be honored with an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration
Kangwana, who was appointed TUK Chancellor on May 4, 2024, by President William Ruto, is celebrated as the founder of Kenya Television Network (KTN), the country’s first private TV station.
Established in March 1990, KTN was created to challenge the monopoly of the state-run Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.
Born in Nyaribari in 1949, Kangwana attended Kisii School where he sat his O-Level examination in 1970 where he scored Division One and later in his A-Level examinations in 1972 passed with 4 Principals.

He was later admitted to the University of Nairobi to study Law and graduated with an LLB Honours degree in 1975. After completing his post-graduate Diploma in Law in 1976, Kangwana was admitted to the Roll of Advocates.
In 1977, Kangwana got a scholarship and joined the University of Edinburgh in Scotland to study a Master’s Degree in Law (LLM).
After he graduated with LLM degree, he joined the Kenya School of Law as a lecturer and later moved to the University of Nairobi as a law lecturer.
Throughout the 1980s and beyond, Kangwana held numerous public and private roles. He was a founding member of the Capital Markets Advisory Board and later served as a board member of the Capital Markets Authority (CMA).

His contributions included membership in key presidential working parties on employment, training, and education, and council roles at Kenyatta, Moi, and Maseno universities. He also served on the International Advisory Council to then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
Kangwana’s entrepreneurial endeavors have established him as a pioneer. He built a conglomerate enterprise spanning real estate, hospitality, financial services, and music publishing.

His leadership roles include Chairman of the Kenya Times Media Trust, founder and Executive Chairman of Trans-National Bank, Chairman of the American Life Insurance Company, and Board Member of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organisation (INTELSAT).
Kangwana was a founding member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA)and served as a legislator between 2000-2006 during which time he served as a member of the House Business Committee and he also chaired the Legal, Privileges and Rules Committee that produced the Standing Orders of the House.
He collaborated in drafting and steering through the Assembly at least six Bills that became law, including establishment of the East African Community Customs Act.
