The family of Sheryl Awino has revealed her last moments before she was fatally stabbed by her boyfriend on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Awino, a first-year student at Mawego National Polytechnic in Homa Bay County, was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, who is also a student at the same institution, in a suspected love triangle.
The 20-year-old also lost her unborn child after the suspect stabbed her in the abdomen with a kitchen knife.
Her father, John Odongo, narrated that he was informed by Awino’s roommate on Saturday morning that she had been admitted to Kendu Adventist Hospital in Rachuonyo North.
However, she later succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack.
Odongo said his daughter was in the hostel until Friday evening when her boyfriend came over. They spent the night together, and no one suspected anything was wrong.
However, at around 5 a.m. on Saturday, commotion was heard from Awino’s room. She was later rushed to the hospital with a stab wound to her abdomen, where she succumbed.
During her admission, medical officers discovered that she was expectant.
The family has called on investigative agencies to ensure justice is served and the suspect is arrested.
Rachuonyo North Police Commander Lydia Parteyie said detectives have launched investigations to apprehend the suspect, who escaped after committing the crime.
