Butere Girls Sports Star Jets to US After Earning Admission in Prestigious University

Former Butere Girls High School student and football player Lorna Faith Wasike has traveled to the United States after securing admission to a prestigious university in the United States (US).

The talented attacker, Lorna Faith Wasike, has earned a scholarship to a top NCAA Division I university, Texas A&M University.

In a statement, the Butere Girls High School Soccer Team said Lorna earned the opportunity through a combination of sports and academics, describing her move as a major milestone in her educational and sporting journey.

“From Butere Girls High School, from the beautiful country Kenya, Lorna Faith Wasike jets out to the United States of America. Through sports and academics, Lorna finds her way to the States to continue with her business in realizing her dreams,” the school noted in a statement.

The school said Texas A&M University will be Lorna’s new home as she continues pursuing her academic and personal goals in the United States, congratulating the former player and wishing her success, saying her achievement reflects the opportunities that can arise through dedication in both the classroom and on the sports field.

Butere Girls Star Lorna Wasike Makes Emotional Promise After US Scholarship

Lorna Faith Wasike thanked Butere Girls High School, its teachers, principal, students, and the entire school community for supporting her throughout her four years in school.

She said the encouragement she received from her teachers and the education she gained at the school helped her achieve good academic results, which contributed to her earning a scholarship to study in the United States.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Butere Girls High School, the teachers, principal, and the students for their support since I joined in Form One. They have always been there for me. Their encouragement, especially the teachers and what they taught us in class, helped me get good grades. Now I’ve got a scholarship in the USA,” she said.

Wasike also expressed gratitude to the Butere Girls soccer team, her coaches, teammates, and the Red Commandos, describing them as an important part of her journey and life story.

Looking ahead, she said she intends to work hard in the United States and hopes her success will create opportunities for other young players who aspire to combine education and sports.

“I would like to thank the Butere Girls Soccer Team, the coaches and my teammates. Since I joined in Form One, they have always been there for me. The Head Commandos are part of my family. They are part of my life story. Since I’m going to the USA, I will not forget you guys. I will always be there for you. I’m going to train hard to impress myself so that I can open doors for others who have left school right now,” she noted.

Football Career Of Lorna Faith Wasike

Lorna Faith Wasike is a Kenyan footballer who plays as a striker and has represented Kenya’s Junior Starlets at the international level.

She rose to national prominence while at Butere Girls High School, where she helped the school win the 2024 KSSSA national girls’ football title and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Wasike gained global recognition during the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, becoming the first Kenyan footballer to win a Player of the Match award at the tournament after her standout performance against Mexico.

Lorna Faith Wasike has also progressed to the senior national team setup after being among three Rising Starlets players handed their first call-up to the provisional Harambee Starlets squad early this year ahead of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

She received her maiden senior team call-up alongside Diana Ochol and Vidah Okeyo, as Harambee Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba named a 34-player provisional squad for the tournament preparations.

The university was originally founded as an agricultural and mechanical school and has since grown into a major institution offering a wide range of academic and research programs.

Texas A&M fields more than 650 student-athletes across 20 varsity sports. Its women’s soccer team competes in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and plays its home matches at Ellis Field.

The university is also widely recognized for its football program, with the team playing at Kyle Field, a stadium with a seating capacity of 102,733.

According to the university, eligible student-athletes may receive athletics aid that can cover tuition, fees, books, housing, meals, and other educational expenses, depending on the recommendation of their coach and the terms of their scholarship.

The scholarship system is designed to support athletes competing in Texas A&M’s NCAA Division I sports programs while they pursue their academic studies.
