The Judiciary of Kenya has provided an update on the condition of Makadara Principal magistrate Monica Kivuti who is recuperating at a hospital in Nairobi after being shot by an officer.

Chief Registrar Winfridah Mokaya provided the update on June 14, 2024, while speaking during a meeting with Judicial Officers attached to the Madaraka Law Courts at the Supreme Court Building.

The meeting was part of a psycho-social counselling and support session launched by the Judiciary of Kenya for Judicial Officers and Staff stationed at Makadara Law Courts following Thursday’s unfortunate shooting incident

The Chief Registrar assured the staff that Magistrate Kivuti is in a stable condition as she undergoes treatment.

Mokaya added that the Judiciary is doing everything to ensure her recovery.

On the other hand, the Magistrates led by Chief Magistrate Tito Gesora requested the Judiciary to beef up security for Judicial Officers and improve infrastructure at Makadara Law Courts.

Chief Registar Mokaya said the Judiciary management is cognizant of the situation at the court.

According to her, the Judiciary will do everything possible to ensure the security of Judicial Officers and staff as they resume duty next week.

Mokaya also noted that the security situation in Makadara is exacerbated by the Judiciary’s infrastructural challenges.

At the same time, the Chief Registrar condemned the senseless act of violence which took place within court precincts and has urged persons who are not satisfied with judicial decisions to raise their grievances through legal channels.

“The Judiciary’s Directorate of Human Resource Management and Development will continue with psycho-social support for Judicial Officers and staff next week to address the trauma that followed the shooting incident,” she said.

The update comes hours after the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) male representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) made an appeal to Kenyans to donate blood for Magistrate Kivuti.

Lawyer Appeals to Kenyans for blood

According to Ombati, the magistrate who is currently admitted at Metropolitan Hospital in Buruburu, Nairobi where she is undergoing medication was in urgent need of blood.

“Urgent appeal for blood donation. This is to kindly request for blood donation for Hon. Monica Kivuti. Your kindness, selflessness, and love is highly appreciated,” the appeal notice detailed.

To help in the blood donation, any well-wisher of any blood group was asked to appear in person at Metropolitan Hospital in Buruburu, Nairobi, or Contact Phone: Kenya Red Cross (+254) 703 037 000/Toll Free: 1199.

The Makadara Law Courts principal magistrate was rushed to the medical facility on Thursday after a police officer fatally shot her at the premises.

According to a police statement, the cop behind the shooting who was identified as an Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Londiani Police Station shot the magistrate during a live court session in a case involving his wife.
