A viral video showing a pedestrian making a dramatic U-turn after spotting a traffic police officer while crossing the Outer Ring Road at the Mutindwa area instead of using a footbridge has sparked laughter and debate across social media.
The clip, widely shared on X, shows a man crossing the multi-lane road before abruptly changing direction after noticing a traffic enforcement officer heading toward him.
The video shows the traffic police officer dashing along the edge of the highway, on the side where several roadside kiosks are located, apparently in an attempt to intercept the pedestrian who was crossing the busy road.
After noticing the officer approaching from his right-hand side, the man abruptly turned back and returned to where he had started.
The man quickly crossed the busy road again without using a footbridge before the officer could catch up.
Man Escapes Arrest
The video has since generated reactions, with many social media users amused by the man’s quick thinking, while others criticized him for risking his life.
One user, Leonard, described the pedestrian’s reaction as “elite situational awareness.” “That wasn’t just crossing the road; that was elite situational awareness. The moment he spotted the police, his instincts kicked in—he assessed the situation, changed direction and disappeared like he had rehearsed the escape.”
Another user, Duke Laston, joked: “Nope… not today.” P4UL also praised the man’s quick reaction, commenting: “Sharp boy.”
Echoing the sentiment, Brian Githinji wrote: “Situational awareness iko tops haha.”
Others simply responded with laughing emojis, saying the man’s sudden U-turn looked like someone who had remembered an urgent meeting.

However, not everyone found the incident amusing.
A user identified as Hoodie Ratt criticized the pedestrian for risking his safety merely to avoid a fine.
“Dude voluntarily risked his life twice in a span of minutes to avoid paying a fine. That situational awareness y’all are talking about angeitumia kuvukia kwa footbridge.”
Another user, Cerebral Cortex, questioned why pedestrians continue crossing dangerous roads despite the availability of footbridges.
“Why should someone risk like that and we have a footbridge now? Enyewe akili zetu ni maji.”
Meanwhile, M. Mbuga said the man’s reaction reflected what many people would do if they suspected they were being followed.
“Always my go-to hack. If I suspect someone is following me and confirm I’m right, the best sprinter has to win.”
The viral clip has reignited conversations about pedestrian safety and compliance with traffic laws, with many Kenyans urging road users to utilize designated footbridges rather than dash across busy highways.

NTSA Intensifies Crackdown on Pedestrians Ignoring Footbridges
The incident comes amid increased enforcement against pedestrians who cross busy highways at undesignated points instead of using footbridges, particularly along major roads in Nairobi.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has intensified its crackdown on pedestrians who fail to use designated footbridges.
NTSA Assistant Director Brenda Sawe said at least 250 pedestrians had been arrested in Nairobi since the crackdown began for failing to use designated footbridges.
Under the Traffic Act, pedestrians who fail to use designated crossing facilities risk fines ranging from KSh500 to KSh5,000 or prosecution for wilfully obstructing the free flow of traffic.
The enforcement campaign has so far targeted several high-risk locations across Nairobi, including Allsops, Buruburu, Nyayo Stadium and now Pipeline, where pedestrians have frequently been found crossing roads at undesignated points despite the availability of footbridges.
NTSA says the operations are informed by road safety data showing that pedestrians account for nearly 38 per cent of all road traffic fatalities in Kenya, making them the single largest category of road users killed in crashes.
The authority has maintained that many of these deaths are preventable if pedestrians consistently use footbridges and designated crossing points.
