Man Sets Girlfriend on Fire Over Food

A middle-aged woman from Murang’a County is receiving medical care after sustaining serious injuries in an attack by a man she is believed to have been in a relationship with. The suspect, identified as Irungu Muturi, allegedly poured kerosene on Grace Wanja and set her on fire.

The incident occurred at Maragua Ridge Village on the morning of Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Police officers have launched investigations to locate Muturi, who fled after committing the crime.

Wanja’s sister, Mary Wangari, said the suspect came home and asked for food.

She stated that Muturi grabbed kerosene and set Wanja on fire when she replied there was no food in the house.

“He asked for food and my sister told him we didn’t cook the previous night. That is when he started saying he would get revenge. He went inside, took kerosene and poured it on Wanja. Before he came to me, he had already set her on fire,” Wangari said.

Wangari said they screamed for help and neighbours came to rescue before they proceeded to the hospital.

“He took kerosene and set her on fire. We screamed for help and the neighbours came to our rescue. They helped Wanja and told us to rush to the hospital,” she said.

Hospital Bill Appeal

Wanja was admitted to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital.

Doctors report at indicate that the woman has suffered 60 percent burn injuries.

She was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized treatment.

Her sister, Lucy Muthoni, appealed for help stating the family cannot funds for medical treatment at KNH.

“We are asking for help because we don’t have the financial capacity to take her to KNH. She has been burnt but has four kids, one is at the children’s home while the others are just here,” Muthoni said.

Twins Killed in House Fire

Two children were burned to death in a house fire in Mwea East, Kirinyaga County.

Murinduko location assistant chief Patrick Njeru said the 4-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, had been left with their grandmother while their mother went to look for a school.

The grandmother left the children in the house and went to the farm around 3:00pm.

Shortly after, she heard a loud bang followed by smoke billowing from the house.

Neighbors rushed to help but were unable to reach the children in time.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
