Man Survives After Car Flies Off Nairobi Expressway

A man has survived a terrifying accident after his vehicle flew off the Nairobi Expressway onto the Mlolongo side of the road.

The accident, which occurred late at night on Saturday, January 18, attracted the attention of passersby who rushed to his rescue.

According to eyewitnesses, the man was driving at high speed when he lost control of the car, resulting in a dangerous plunge.

Further, good Samaritans at the scene forced open the doors of the wrecked vehicle to pull the man who walked out staggering and seemed disoriented by the incident.

“We saw the car go over the edge. It was terrifying,” said one of the witnesses at the scene.

Cause of the Expressway Accident

Eyewitnesses revealed that the man appeared intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Those who helped him described a strong smell of alcohol emanating from him, raising concerns about impaired driving and its role in the accident.

“Why were you speeding like that, you are lucky you are alive. You can’t just get drunk and drive, try and take better care of yourself,” one man at the scene told the survivor. 

However, authorities have yet to release an official statement or confirm whether the driver was drunk.

This accident highlights growing safety concerns on Kenyan roads, especially involving careless driving and high-speed driving.

Latest NTSA Statistics

Recent data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) highlights a rise in road accident deaths, with many incidents linked to speeding, reckless driving, and poorly maintained vehicles.

As of a September 2024 report, at least 3,056 lives were lost in road accidents between January 1 and August 27, 2024.

Pedestrians were the most affected group, with fatalities rising by 15 percent to 1,177, compared to 1,044 recorded during the same period in 2023.

Passenger deaths also increased by 15 percent, with at least 595 lives lost in crashes, up from 519 in 2023. Additionally, 262 drivers lost their lives in accidents.

NTSA further noted that 7,114 Kenyans were involved in road accidents since the beginning of the year, an increase of 703 from the previous year.

Of these, 3,674 individuals sustained serious injuries, while 585 suffered minor injuries.
