Matatu Owners Association Chairman Albert Karakacha has announced that public transport fares are set to increase effective Wednesday, April 15, after the significant hike in fuel prices announced on Tuesday, April 14.
In an interview on April 14, the Matatu Owners Association Chairman said operators have held consultations and agreed to adjust bus fares in response to higher operating costs.
“Okay, for the newly announced prices, I think from tomorrow, we’ve been consulting, and we will push the prices for bus fare up, starting from tomorrow,” Karakacha said.
Matatu Owners’ Chair Addresses Fuel Prices
Karakacha stated that Diesel prices have increased significantly, raising operational expenses for matatu operators across the country.
In his statement, the MOA Chairman noted that the new cost structure has made it difficult to maintain existing fare levels without affecting delivery.
“Because if you see that we normally use diesel, and the diesel has gone up by 40 shillings, if you try to match with what we’ve been spending, it’s around 206,” he said.
Further, he indicated that members of the association will implement revised fares starting tomorrow as they align transport charges with the increased fuel costs.

Karakacha acknowledged that the fare changes will directly impact ordinary Kenyans, who bear the cost of transport adjustments, adding that consumers will be the most affected as operators respond to rising fuel expenses.
“So maybe from tomorrow, we’ve been talking to our members all over the country, and we know that we are going to adjust the fare to go up. We know that the common mwananchi is the one going to suffer, because it’s the consumer, because they’re the ones who normally, we normally carry, and they’re the ones who are going to suffer,” the Matatu Owners Chair explained.
