Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has asked to take care of Baby Sagini after reports emerged that he had no family to look after him.
His relatives were jailed for gouging out his eyes, and the caregivers left also reportedly abandoned the home.
“Nimekosa usingizi coz of this sad story of Baby Sagini, who is now homeless in Kisii just a few days after his relatives were jailed for gouging out his eyes.” Sonko tweeted.
The former governor stated that other leaders including Hon. Zairee Jihanda, Japhet Nyakundi, Sylvanus Slyvanus Osoro, and others requested to chip in and help the young boy but their intentions were politicized.
“Together with other leaders like Hon. Zairee Jihanda, Japhet Nyakundi, and Hon. Slyvanus Osoro, among others, requested to chip in and help immediately this sad incident happened, but the matter was politicized.” Sonko stated.

As such, the former governor asked for permission to take care of baby Sagini.
Mike Sonko also called on well-wishers to partner with him to sponsor Baby Sagini’s medication instead of him being abandoned by the family and care givers in Kisii.
Baby Sagini’s Tragedy
3-year-old Sagini lost his eyesight on December last year after his close family members inhumanly gouged out his eyes and left him to die in a maize plantation.
Upon investigations into the incident, police arrested Alex Ochogo(cousin), (Pacificah Nyakerario(aunt) and Rael Nyakerario(grandmother) as suspects.
Moreover, the three family members were charged on the particulars that on the 13th and 14th of December,2022, they unlawfully and willingly gouged out Baby Sagini’s eyes causing grievous harm to the victim contrary to section 234 of the penal code which attracts a life sentence.
Ochogo the cousin has been sentenced to 40 years in prison, Pacificah the aunt slapped with 10 years whereas Rael the grandmother is to serve 5 years in jail for the inhuman act.

“I have taken into account their respect ages,27,51 and 80 years, I arrive at the decision that the following would be an appropriate sentence in the circumstances, Alex Ochogo, sentenced to serve 40 years imprisonment, Racificah Nyakerario sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and Rael Nyakerario five years imprisonment,” Magistrate Christine Ogweno ruled.
Nonetheless, baby Sagini is currently under the care of the children’s department in Kisii.
