Our Lady Consolata (OLC) Mugoiri Girls High School is a national girls’ secondary school located in Murang’a County.
Mugoiri Girls traces its origins back to the early 20th century when the Consolata missionaries arrived in Tuthu, Murang’a.
On 29th June 1902, the four Italian missionaries held their first mass in the small settlement and soon after began constructing a mission station.
More than 30 years later, the Consolata missionaries opened a school in the region, initially under the leadership of Sister Zaveria Pasqualina
In 1938, the primary school enrolled 25 pupils and was staffed by four nuns, including the headmistress. This school was phased out in 1940 and replaced by Gateiguru Intermediate School.
Mugoiri Girls history
That same year, learning at Gateiguru was suspended due to World War II’s East African campaign. Italian-born nuns were deemed a security risk by the British colonial government and were taken into custody, confined in Mathari town, about 170 kilometres from Nairobi.
After Italian forces surrendered and the campaign ended, the sisters returned and resumed teaching.
They also established a secondary school in Mathari, and in 1957, Our Lady Consolata Mugoiri Girls’ High School officially opened. In 1958, Gateiguru Intermediate School was phased out, allowing the sisters to focus solely on the new secondary school.
In 1959, the school was relocated to Murang’a, on the same site as Gateiguru Intermediate School. The first headmistress was Sister Christiana Sestero. New stone-walled buildings were constructed, replacing earlier structures made of sisal posts and timber.
Some notable Mugoiri alumni include Chief Justice Martha Koome and nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege.
Mugoiri Girls High School currently has a student population of over 1,200 and over 50 teachers.
Over the years, the school has continued to record top performances in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examinations featuring among the top 200 countrywide.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 284 registered candidates, with more than 90% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

According to guidelines introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2020, Kenya’s 103 national schools were divided into four clusters.
Mugoiri Girls was categorized under Cluster Four (IV), with the recommended annual fee limit set at about Ksh75,798.
The actual fees may, however, differ slightly from one school to another due to extra charges imposed by individual institutions for items like uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
