Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Wednesday afternoon met senior executives of Nation Media Group in Entebbe as efforts intensified to resolve the controversial closure of several of the company’s media outlets operating in Uganda.

The meeting took place at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe and brought together key figures from both the military establishment and the media industry following days of escalating tensions.

Among those present were Nation Media Group owner Rostam Aziz, his son Saam Aziz and Georgia Mutagaywa.

Also in attendance were veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda and Acting UPDF/Defense Public Information Director Chris Magezi.

The discussions centered on the suspension of NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor, Spark TV, and KFM, a move that has sparked intense public debate and raised concerns among journalists and civil society groups.

The shutdown followed accusations from military authorities that some media platforms had aired reports and commentary considered hostile to national security interests.

The decision triggered widespread reactions across social media and the political landscape, with critics warning against intimidation of independent media while supporters argued that responsible reporting on security matters is essential.

Sources familiar with Wednesday’s meeting described the atmosphere as cautious but constructive, with both parties reportedly exploring ways to rebuild working relations and address concerns raised by the military leadership.

The closure of the outlets has significantly disrupted television broadcasts, radio programming and newspaper circulation, affecting audiences across Uganda and raising broader questions about the future of press freedom in the country ahead of an increasingly active political season.

Although no formal statement had been released by either the UPDF or Nation Media Group by Wednesday evening, the rare face-to-face engagement between Gen. Muhoozi and the media executives was viewed by many observers as an important step toward easing tensions and finding a possible resolution to the standoff.
