Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen on Monday, July 8, addressed reports about the “expensive” accessories he owns amid public debate over his lifestyle.

In an interview with comedian and emcee Oga Obinna, Murkomen revealed that the most expensive watch he owns cost him about Ksh900,000.

In addition, the CS revealed that the most expensive shoes he owns cost him an amount between Ksh70,000 and 80,000 while the most expensive belt he has cost him about Ksh 40,000.

“The most expensive watch which I bought with my own money, well it was almost like, I think if I remember very well because it’s been a while is Kshs 900,000,” he said.

“The most expensive shoe I have is between Kshs 70,000 to 80,000, the belt is probably 40,000 to Ksh 50,000 and the tie is about Kshs 20,000,” he added.

However, he clarified that the Casio, G shock watch he was wearing during the interview was not as costly as purported by Kenyans online.

Casio Watch

In the interview, Murkomen clarified that he got the watch he was wearing while on an official trip abroad.

He said that he got the watch at Kshs 9,000 as a memory of the first watch he ever wore, noting that it meant a lot to him despite its low value financially.

“So, the other day, I was on official trip, and I found this Casio, at one of the airports and I bought it myself. To remind myself of the first watch I ever wore. So, this is overly important for me. It is a vintage.

“Even though the amount was like nine thousand shillings, but value wise in my heart, is more valuable than other watches,” he concluded.

Murkomen Love for Watches

Murkomen further told a story about little-known details of how he got his first watch back in the early 90’s.

The CS recalled how his father used his love for watches to motivate him to work harder in school.

In addition, Murkomen narrated how he would wear his father’s watch due to his admiration.

“So, I always really liked my father’s watch so once in a while I would wear it and so forth, and then there was this priest called father Reinard who is like the first leader in our area, he’s like the MP,” he recalled.

Additionally, the CS he also admired the watch of a local priest in his whom he referred to as a very significant leader in his community.

Likewise, he reminisced on the promise his father made to him if he attained good grades in school.

“So, father Reinard used to pull his sweater up and he had a very nice watch. So, my father told me okay, he realized that obsession with a watch, so he told me, if you become number one. I was always number three, I never used to beat the other two guys who were ahead of us, so I was number three and sometimes four,” he said.

Despite his hard work, Murkomen fell short of the top position by just one mark.

However, the CS stated that his father saw his efforts and eventually got him his first watch.

“So, he pitied me, he told me, okay, you have earned it, so I don’t know if he sold his goat or sheep, he used to be a hustler, he bought me the first watch which was a Casio. It wasn’t G shock then,” he noted.

His remarks came two days after he publicly proposed a law that would compel government officials to have their lifestyles audited.

Coming amid concerns raised about opulence among key figures in the government, the former Senator proclaimed his support for the Lifestyle Audit Bill which he noted would provide parameters for auditing the state officers and their living standards to ascertain consistency with their lawful income
