Mutuse Addresses Reports of Spending Millions to Construct Swimming Pool in Ukambani

Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse has denied allegations that he allocated Ksh. 9.9 million for the construction of a swimming pool at a local school in his constituency.

He clarified that the project, which has sparked public debate among his constituents, was initiated and funded by his predecessor.

In a statement on Sunday, February 2, through his press team, Mutuse dismissed the reports as inaccurate and misleading.

“The Office of Hon. Mwengi Mutuse wishes to address recent erroneous reports claiming that the Member of Parliament has spent Ksh. 9.9 million to construct a swimming pool at one of our local schools. We would like to clarify that these claims are not factual.

The swimming pool in question is located at Kalulini Secondary School, an esteemed institution in our constituency with a rich history. This project was initiated and paid for during the tenure of Hon. Mutuse’s predecessor,” the statement read.

Mutuse Denies Funding Swimming Pool Project

Mutuse further explained that the project was part of efforts to modernize the school and elevate it to national school status.

Additionally, he defended himself by stating that the swimming pool had already been fully funded, refuting claims that he personally allocated money for its construction.

“We are also reliably aware that the project has been allocated adequate funds to facilitate its operationalization. Therefore, any sensational claims suggesting that Hon. Mwengi Mutuse personally spent money to construct a swimming pool are simply inaccurate and intended to misrepresent the truth,” he said.

He also reminded the public that, under the law, a Member of Parliament’s role in the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) is limited to oversight and representation, while implementation is handled by the NG-CDF committee.

“In Kibwezi West, we have even adopted a people-centered, labor-based project implementation model to eliminate corruption and cartels,” he stated.

Mutuse reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and development, urging the public to disregard the misinformation surrounding the project.

His clarification came in the wake of multiple social media posts claiming that he spent Ksh. 9.9 million on a swimming pool for a Kibwezi West school, a project that was supposed to be completed by July 2023 but remains unused due to the school’s lack of a reliable water source, according to the Auditor General.
