The Nairobi Hospital Board has appointed Dr. Barcley Onyambu as its new Chairman. In a statement on March 10, the Board said the decision marks a fresh chapter in leadership focused on strengthening governance and ethical standards.
Dr. Onyambu is a seasoned obstetrician and gynecologist with extensive experience in healthcare governance.

He has been a Board member since 2024 and has chaired key committees, including Human Resources, Infrastructure, and Audit & Risk.
“His appointment reflects the Board’s commitment to continuous improvement and upholding the highest standards in healthcare delivery,” reads part of the statement.

The Board extended its gratitude to the immediate former Chairman, Dr. Chris M. N. Bichage, PhD, for his dedicated service and leadership over the past year and a half.
Dr. Onyambu Education & Experience
Dr. Onyambu is an OB/GYN doctor who has been in practice for over 20 years.

He graduated from the University of Nairobi Medical School.
He also holds a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology and has advanced training in healthcare management from Strathmore University.
Dr. Onyambu provides comprehensive obstetrical and gynaecological care to women of all ages, from adolescence through menopause.
He has a special interest in fertility preservation and treatment, high-risk pregnancies, and minimally invasive surgery.
He is serving as a lead consultant at ANKH Women’s Health clinic.
Dr. Onyambu is taking over at a time when the hospital is facing a legal challenge.

Nairobi Hospital Court Case
On February 15, the court issued temporary orders suspending the implementation of a resolution regarding the election of directors to the board of management and the election of trustees of the association on December 4, 2024.
The court ruled that the suspension will remain in place pending the hearing and determination of the case.
In a follow up statement, the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA) which runs Nairobi Hospital said the facility will continue providing quality healthcare despite the legal dispute.

Nairobi Hospital’s acting CEO Felix Osano said the facility will comply with the court order and look for other legal solutions.
The legal dispute arose after Samuel Muchiri challenged the outcome of the December 4 election of a new board of directors.
Muchiri who is a medical doctor and a member of the Kenya Hospital Association faulted the conduct of the elections.
Osano took over after the exit of James Nyamongo as KHA boss upon expiry of his contract on December 6, 2024.
