The National Police Service (NPS) has issued an update on the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti led by Kenyan Police officers.
In a statement on Saturday, July 27, 2024, NPS highlighted key wins that the officers have achieved so far in the MSS Mission which also comprises officers from the Haiti National Police (HNP).
NPS in the statement highlighted that the MSS team has recaptured Auorite Portuaire Nationale (APN) port from gangs.
Further, the Police Service said that the MSS team has made significant strides in patrolling and clearing road blockades that had been erected along the road leading to the gang-ridden town of Ganthier.
“The Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission team comprising the National Police Service Officers and the Haiti National Police (HNP) has continued to register success as they combat gang activities and restore security in Haiti. The MSS team recaptured Auorite Portuaire Nationale (APN) port from gangs,” read part of the statement.
“As part of the team’s effort to provide security for critical infrastructural sites and transit locations, the MSS has made significant strides in patrolling and clearing road blockades that had been erected along the road leading to the gang-ridden town of Ganthier.”
National Police Provides Update on Haiti Mission
NPS said that the Head of Haiti Presidential Transition Council Edgard Leblanc Fils on July 26, 2024, paid a visit to MSS Force Commander Godfrey Otunge (SAIG) at the MSS Headquarters and later addressed the MSS team.

In addition, the United States ambassador to Haiti and the United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield on July 19 visited the MSS team taking part in the peacekeeping mission.
“National Police Service officers in Haiti reiterates its commitment to continue working closely with HNP and the people of Haiti, in discharging their mandate to help in the restoration of law and order in Haiti,” added NPS
The update comes after the peacekeeping mission received a significant boost with the arrival of an additional 200 Kenyan police officers on Tuesday, July 17.
A second contingent of officers joined the first batch of Kenyan officers who landed in the capital Port-au-Prince nearly a month ago.

The new chief of Haiti’s National Police Normil Rameau welcomed the second contingent’s arrival and expressed his eagerness to work alongside them.
“We are happy to work side-by-side with the Kenyans, in the name of the government, we give them a warm welcome,” said the police chief.

The Second batch’s arrival came after the remarks made by Commander Godfrey Otunge, affirming the force’s commitment to fulfilling their mandate and bring peace to Haiti.
In his first ever public address, Otunge emphasized that there was “no room for failure” in the MSS team’s effort to combat the powerful gangs that have been wreaking havoc in the Carribean nation.
Also, the update by NPS over the mission comes after United States Secretary of State held a discussion with President William Ruto on Thursday.
Blinken in the call while highlighting the peacekeeping mission thanked President Ruto for Kenya’s contributions to the multinational security support mission to Haiti.
The Kenyan-led mission is aimed at helping the nation combat the rampant gang violence experienced over the years that has seen criminal gangs control at least 80% of the capital Port-Au-Prince.
