National Police Speaks of May 8th Mass Recruitment of 5,000 Officers

The National Police Service (NPS) has dismissed reports that a national recruitment exercise will be conducted in May 2025.

In a statement, NPS flagged the poster taking rounds on social media as FAKE, terming it as “Purported recruitment into the NPS.”

According to the poster, recruitment should start on May 8, 2025.

It claimed that the Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja has directed the NPS to recruit 5,000 suitably qualified applicants to be trained as Police Constables.

Govt to Recruit 10,000 Police Officers

This follows Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen‘s announcement of the government’s plan to recruit 10,000 police officers in the 2025-2026 financial year.

Speaking on March 26, Murkomen stated that the government is dedicated to tackling the challenges the NPS faces in its operations.

He acknowledged that the NPS conducted only limited annual recruitment operations for police officers, attributing the declining numbers to resource constraints.

“We are conscious of the fact that in the last 3 to 4 years, we have not been able to hire or recruit new police officers and that has put a big strain on most of the police stations,” he said.

“I am glad to announce that in the next financial year and in a process that will begin from this financial year in a month or two, we shall be going out to recruit another 10,000 police officers to make sure that the police service is resourced.”

Further, Murkomen directed the NPS to formulate a comprehensive plan that involves hiring more officers annually and keeping records of the numbers as time progresses.

Murkomen also hinted that the Ministry of Interior would formulate policies to promote and reward performing security officers.

He, however, warned that underperforming police officers risk being relieved of their official duties.

Prison Constables & Cadet Officers Recruitment

On April 7, the Kenya Prison Service (KPS) announced the recruitment of prison constables, cadet officers, technicians, and artisans.

Recruitment for prison constables (Male & female) will be conducted on April 30, 2025.

KPS also listed the available slots for the other mentioned positions and encouraged qualified candidates to apply.

Applications should be sent to the Commissioner General of Prisons before April 30, 2025, by 5:00 P.M. 

As for prison constables, KPS listed the centers where the recruitment will be held in all 47 counties.
