Bishop Alleges Kenyan Team Brought Coffin Before Match Day

A football stakeholder in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League has claimed that a team in the local league has been using witchcraft to try and win matches. In an interview with the Daily Nation, Bishop Fred Akama, a member of the Board of Trustees for Kenya Police FC, alleged that one of the Kenyan Premier League teams attempted to smuggle a coffin into the Police Sacco Stadium the night before a match last season.

However, security officers at the facility intercepted their attempt to bring the coffin into the stadium.

“On match day last season, a prominent local team I won’t name tried to perform rituals before our game. They attempted to bring a coffin into the Police Sacco Stadium in South ‘C’, Nairobi, at midnight. It was unclear if there was a body inside, but security officers stopped them,” Akama revealed.

He further revealed that later they came with their priests and sprinkled some water around the stadium including goalposts, match balls and cones, usually meant for the dead which prompted him to hold prayers.

“I had not planned to attend a match that day, but I received a phone call from our club’s executive chairman to go to the stadium immediately and hold prayers since there was growing tension,” the bishop stated.

According to Akama, despite the team using their ‘magic’ they won the match on match day.

“During the match, one of their officials kept complaining that their ‘magic’ wasn’t working. We had already scored, and we eventually won by three goals. They were saying, ‘Today, science isn’t working for us,'” said Akama.

The discourse around the use of witchcraft in football has been there for a while.

In 2015, Gor Mahia and Yanga FC accused each other of using witchcraft. Reports indicated that the Green Army refrained from using the main entrance, believing that Yanga FC had placed “Juju” there.

Meanwhile, Yanga FC declined to use the changing rooms, claiming that Gor Mahia officials had filled the area with charms.
