A retired Sergeant Major of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and ex-midfielder for the National soccer team Harambee Stars, Elijah Koranga has passed away.
He died on the evening of Wednesday, February 5, at Blooms Hospital in Nakuru County.

Following his death, many Kenyans have expressed their condolences to his family.
Kenyans Mourn Elijah Koranga
Sports journalist Fred Arocho offered his sympathies, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Elijah’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul find peace in eternal rest.”

Another mourner by the name Soul Mender remarked, “This is sad news. Elijah Koranga was not only a dedicated soldier in the Kenya Defence Forces but also a footballer who made significant contributions to Kenyan sports. His legacy continues through his children, who have made their mark in basketball.”
Ramadhan Asaboh, a social media user, remembered Koranga not only as an international footballer but also as a Sergeant Major in the Kenya Defence Forces, the highest rank within KDF.

He described him as “a very dedicated man and a fatherly figure,” and added, “May Allah grant him the highest rank in heaven.”
George Ochieng Onyango reflected on watching Koranga play against Gor Mahia, recalling, “In the match between Gor Mahia FC and Scarlet FC in 1990, he ended Gor Mahia FC’s unbeaten run. Farewell, soccer legend, the late Elijah Koranga. May his soul rest in peace.”
Before his passing, Elijah Koranga retired from the Kenya Defence Forces in October 2024 after nearly 40 years of service.
Former Harambee Stars Midfielder KDF Career
Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Elijah Koranga dedicated four decades to KDF, leaving an indelible mark through his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment.
Throughout his career, he held various significant roles, including positions in the 3rd Battalion Kenya Rifles (3KR), 2 Brigade, and the Kenya Military Academy.

His career culminated with his appointment as Defence Forces Sergeant Major (DFSM) in 2019, a prestigious role where he served as a crucial advisor to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) on matters affecting service members.
Koranga’s tenure as DFSM was characterized by his ability to inspire and motivate his colleagues. Known for his amiable personality, he provided sound advice and encouragement, fostering a supportive environment within KDF.
Elijah’s Football career
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Koranga excelled in sports and maintained a balanced family life, earning admiration for his well-rounded success.
Elijah’s football journey began in the late 1980s and continued into the early 1990s, during which he represented the Harambee Stars, Kenya’s national football team.
His international performances showcased his exceptional talent and dedication to the sport.
Koranga’s club career was also remarkable. He played for the military football side Scarlet Football Club, which later became Ulinzi Stars.

Throughout the 1990s, he was a key player for Ulinzi Stars, significantly contributing to their successes in the Kenyan Premier League.
His leadership on the pitch was instrumental in guiding the team to numerous victories. In 1992, he also played for Transcom Nakuru, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to football.
Elijah was the brother of offensive midfielder Frazier Ochieng, who played for Shabana and Gor Mahia in the early 2000s.
