Janet Wanja, Former Malkia Strikers Player Dies

Janet Wanja, a former player for the Malkia Strikers and a heroine of the national volleyball team, has passed away. She died on the night of Thursday, December 26.

Her family announced the news in a statement noting, “The family of Janet Wanja would like to announce her passing after a brave battle with gallbladder cancer.”

Our sincere and deepest gratitude goes out to the Kenya Pipeline Company for supporting us throughout this journey and providing all of her medical needs. Further updates will be provided in due course.”

Wanja was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in August 2024. Following her death, Kenyans expressed their condolences to her family.

Kenyans mourn the death of Janet Wanja

President William Ruto eulogized her as a gifted and disciplined volleyball star who served the cause of country’s sports with honour and dedication.

“She was focused, hardworking and a team player. May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time. One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja,” President Ruto expressed in his condolence message.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga remarked that Wanja’s contributions to volleyball will always be remembered.

“Gone too soon, champ. Your impact on volleyball in Kenya and the sports industry was immense and will never go unnoticed. Rest in peace, champion. Legend. Our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time,” Olunga shared.

Sports journalist Ole Teya noted that her legacy in sports will endure forever. On his part, Francis Otwoma, Special Reports Editor at KTN, honored Wanja as a true legend who proudly represented Kenya on and off the court.

“Her contributions to the Malkia Strikers and Kenyan sports will never be forgotten. This is a heartbreaking loss to end the year,” Otwoma stated.

Janet Wanja was a significant figure in Kenyan volleyball, known for her numerous achievements and lasting impact on the sport.

Her journey began at Mukumu Girls High School, where her exceptional talent quickly became evident. She soon joined the Kenya Women’s National Volleyball Team, the Malkia Strikers, and represented Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

At just 17 years old, Wanja showcased her skills at the 2001 All-Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria.

Her club career included notable stints with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Kenya Pipeline, where she not only played but also served as a gym instructor.

Her impressive performance on the court earned her the title of ‘Best Setter’ at the 2007 African Volleyball Championship, a key factor in Kenya’s seventh continental title.

Additionally, she played a crucial role in Kenya’s victory at the 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix.

After retiring from active play, Wanja transitioned to coaching, helping to prepare the Malkia Strikers for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her dedication and skill have left a profound legacy in Kenyan volleyball, inspiring many young athletes.
