Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has responded to claims by Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi that he was funded during his campaign.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday April 28 with Weru TV, Gachagua denied receiving any funding.

Instead, he alleged that the accusations are part of a smear campaign orchestrated by President William Ruto to tarnish his reputation.
“I don’t want to talk about such a person; it only annoys me. These are people the President is sending to insult leaders. He has sent him to insult me,” said Gachagua.

Additionally, Gachagua claimed that the smear campaign is a tactic being used to intimidate leaders from the Mount Kenya region, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“William Ruto harbors hatred for our leaders from Mount Kenya. Today, the young man he sent was busy insulting me on a community TV station. Now, he has spent the whole day insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta. That is William Ruto’s work,” Gachagua alleged.

Gachagua Denies Being Funded by Sudi
During the same interview, the former Deputy President further claimed that several senior government officials, including Cabinet Secretaries, are merely ceremonial figures, while real power lies with Principal Secretaries who hail from President Ruto’s ethnic community.

Moreover, Gachagua alleged that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja is powerless, and the real authority in the police service lies with Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.
“At the Central Bank, he has placed Kamau Thugge, but beneath him, he has appointed a woman named Koech, who is the real decision-maker. In the police service, although Kanja is in charge, Lagat is the one who truly makes the decisions.
In Alice Wahome’s ministry, he has placed Nixon Korir under her; he is the one calling the shots. William Ruto does not work with anyone outside his ethnic group,” Gachagua claimed.
Sudi Says He Funded Gachagua’s 2022 Campaigns
Gachagua’s response comes days after Kapseret Legislator claimed he financially supported Rigathi Gachagua during the 2022 Kenyan presidential campaign, stating that Gachagua was “broke” and lacked funds for his campaign efforts.

Sudi alleged that Gachagua misrepresented himself as a major financial contributor to the campaign, asserting instead that he personally provided significant funds to Gachagua.
“Rigathi Gachagua knows how much I gave him to campaign. He goes around lying to people that he funded the campaigns. Let’s be honest, Gachagua didn’t even have a single cent,” Sudi said.
