The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on Tuesday, December 10, announced changes to its VAT return filing process.
In a statement, the Authority said that registered VAT taxpayers will now file their returns using pre-filled tax information starting from November 2024 tax period.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wishes to notify all VAT-registered taxpayers that, to simplify the VAT return filing process, the VAT return will be pre-filled with tax information available to KRA starting from the November 2024 tax period,” the statement read.
According to the Authority this move is to simplify the VAT return filing process for taxpayers.
KRA Introduces Pre-filled Tax Information to File VAT Returns
Further the Authority called on all VAT registered Taxpayers to confirm the accuracy of their pre-filled November 2024 VAT returns prior to submitting the returns by December 20, 2024.
In addition, KRA reminded all Taxpayers of their obligation to issue electronic tax invoices and transmit the invoice details to them as prescribed in law.
“Please note that any input VAT claim that is not validated through TIMS/eTIMS or against existing customs import declarations for import VAT claims will not be allowed for deduction in the return,” KRA emphasized.

KRA also assured taxpayers that it will continue to educate and support them through the transition to this simplified VAT return filing process, ensuring compliance with the electronic tax invoicing requirements.
Earlier on November the Authority had issued a tax update where it had issued a fresh notice to all registered taxpayers regarding new steps for verifying mobile phone numbers linked to Personal Identification (PIN) Numbers on the iTax system.
In a notice on Tuesday, November 12, KRA outlined a straightforward authentication procedure that all taxpayers are required to follow upon logging into the iTax platform.
Mobile Number Verification for Taxpayers
The process introduced aimed at validating mobile numbers to facilitate secure communication and reliable delivery service.

“Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) reminds all taxpayers that further to our Public Notice on “Taxpayer Register Data Clean Up Exercise” dated 24th June 2024, all registered taxpayers are required to authenticate the mobile telephone number registered in iTax upon logging into the system,” the notice read.

The Step-by-Step Authentication Guide for taxpayers introduced by KRA includes:
- Login – Taxpayers should log in to iTax using their PIN and password. The system will display the mobile phone number currently registered to the account.
- Verify or Update – If the displayed mobile number is correct and preferred, taxpayers should click “Send Verification Code” to receive a code on that number. If the number is inaccurate or no longer preferred, users can update it on the pop-up screen with their current mobile number before proceeding.
- Enter Verification Code – A verification code will be sent to the selected mobile phone number. Taxpayers must enter this code on the iTax platform to complete the login and verification process.
