List of ODM MPs to Take Over Lucrative Committees After Removal of Gachagua’s Insiders

On Wednesday, March 5, several allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were removed from key lucrative parliamentary positions, paving way for several ODM Members of Parliament (MPs) to take over those roles.

National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro noted that specific committees had terms that lapsed during the last session, and these committees have not convened since.

Gachagua’s allies affected by this purge include Gathoni Wamuchomba, MP for Githunguri, who chaired the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee; Ndindi Nyoro, MP for Kiharu, who led the Budget and Appropriations Committee; Vincent Kawaya, MP for Mwala, who chaired the National Assembly Energy Committee; Jane Kihara, MP for Naivasha, who served on the Lands Committee; and James Gakuya, who was the Chairperson of the Trade Committee.

List of ODM Members to Get Lucrative Positions

Other members affected by the purge are Edward Muriu (Gatanga), George Kuimburi (Juja ), and Onesmus Ngogoyo (Kajiado North).

Additionally, Runyenjes MP Eric Karemba, Manyatta legislator John Mukunji, and Major Donk Gathiru of Embakasi Central were ousted from lucrative committees.

ODM members expected to take over the lucrative committee positions vacated by the ousted Gachagua allies include:

1. Samuel Atandi, MP for Alego Usonga, who is anticipated to become the Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, succeeding Ndindi Nyoro.
2. Benard Shinali, MP for Ikolomani, is expected to take over as Chairperson of the Labor Committee, a role previously held by James Gakuya.
3. Ken Chonga, MP for Kilifi South, is set to chair the Labor Committee, previously led by Eric Karemba.
4. Nominated MP Irene Mayaka is expected to chair the Regional Integration Committee.
5. James Nyikal, MP for Seme, is anticipated to become the Chairperson of the Health Committee.

Gachagua Allies Ousted from Key Positions in the Senate

This purge in the National Assembly follows the removal of Gachagua’s from key committees in the Senate.

Among those de-whipped are Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, who chaired the Roads and Transport Committee; Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, who was the Chair of the Education Committee; and Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango, who led the Agriculture Committee.

Additionally, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who chaired the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, has also been removed from that position, alongside Kajiado Senator Lenku Seki, who previously chaired the Trade Committee.

 Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has been removed from the Senate Public Accounts Committee.
