Businessman and politician who was named as a person of interest in the murder of slain Kaspul Member of Parliament, Ong’ondo Were, has broken his silence after surrendering to Gigiri Police Station following an order issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).While speaking to the media on Wednesday night, April 7, 2025, Philip Nahashon Aroko stated that he will not comment on Were’s murder and will instead leave the matter for the police to investigate.
“The situation we are in is very unfortunate. I do not want to talk about it because it is under investigation and I want to leave it for the police to do their job. They summoned me to come; I am here. If anybody has anything that wants to ask me, I will be ready to answer,” said the politician.
At the same time, Aroko accused Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga of implicating her in the murder of the Kaspul MP.
“I want to tell the people of Homa Bay County that the politics in that county has been turned to madness, it is not politics, it is thuggery.
I saw the Governor pushing so much for me to be called here; she is making calls to the police for me to be called here,” Aroko added.

On his part, Aroko’s lawyer, Danstan Omari, stated that his client is being pursued so that he can be denied the right to attend Were’s funeral.
“We have instructions that the reason why Mheshimiwa Aroko is being called to appear is to make him not attend the funeral. Politics of exclusion during funerals will not survive in this country; Mheshimiwa has a right to attend and bury. Anybody who is scared of his popularity, rumor has it that they want to detain him, charge him with murder, and deny him bail,” Omari alleged.

He is a person of interest in the ongoing investigation into the brutal murder of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were. Compliance with this request is mandatory,” read the DCI statement.
