The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a notice on temporary traffic disruption in Nairobi due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) tournament.
In a statement on Thursday, August 21, NPS informed the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi on Friday.
Traffic diversion routes Thika Superhighway
Motorists from Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) heading to Thika Road (Ruiru/Juja/Thika) should use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, as there will be a roadblock at Muthaiga.
On the other hand, vehicles using the Thika Superhighway heading to Mwiki should use Ruaka-Baba Ndogo-Lucky Summer-Nairobi River-Mwiki.
Disruptions ahead of the CHAN 2024 quarterfinal match
NPS also said that vehicles from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to Nairobi CBD should use Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, as there will be a roadblock at Ruiru Interchange.

In addition, vehicles from Githurai to Nairobi CBD should use Githurai 44-Kiambu Road while vehicles from Nairobi CBD heading to Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani Stadium (without vehicle access passes) should use the Service Lane at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
“The National Police Service continues to work collaboratively with relevant agencies and urges all motorists to cooperate with officers on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow. Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules,” reads part of the statement.
The statement comes ahead of Kenya’s highly anticipated CHAN 2024 quarterfinal match at MISC Kasarani on Friday against Madagascar.
Fan capacity at Kasarani Stadium increased
Earlier, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that a total of 38,400 fans will be allowed into Kasarani Stadium.
CAF has revised the attendance limit upwards to 80% of stadium capacity, up from the previous 60% restriction that allowed only 27,000 fans during Kenya’s last Group A clash against Zambia. The earlier cap had been imposed due to multiple security breaches during the initial group stage matches.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya welcomed the decision, saying:
“I have welcomed the Confederation of African Football (CAF)’s decision to revise stadium attendance to 80%, translating to 36,000 tickets. CAF is working to reopen the ticketing portal to accommodate the additional numbers, ensuring more fans can rally behind our National Team, Harambee Stars, in the ongoing CHAN 2024 tournament.”
Speaking during a media briefing on Thursday afternoon, the CS confirmed that CAF will reopen the ticketing portal to allow the sale of the additional 11,400 tickets.
This update comes amid continued frustration from fans, many of whom have reported issues accessing tickets through the Mookh.com platform.
Despite announcements that tickets were sold out, users say they encountered repeated crashes and error messages while trying to make purchases.
