The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced an intensified road safety operation ahead of the August school holidays as thousands of learners prepare to travel home.
In a statement on July 23, the authority said the operation will be conducted in collaboration with the National Police Service, County Transport and Safety Committees, and other stakeholders to reduce road crashes involving children during the holiday travel period.
“As part of the ongoing Operation Watoto Wafike Salama Campaign, the Authority, in collaboration with the National Police Service, County Transport and Safety Committees, and other stakeholders, will intensify road safety compliance checks and public awareness campaigns along major transport corridors,” read part of the statement.
NTSA Intensifies Road Safety Crackdown Ahead of August School Holidays
According to NTSA, the multi-agency operation will focus on major transport corridors, where officers will conduct compliance checks and road safety awareness campaigns.
The authority said enforcement teams will carry out heightened patrols and spot checks on vehicles transporting children, alongside random inspections to assess vehicle roadworthiness.
Police officers will inspect key safety features, including speed limiters, seat belts, tyres, brakes, lights, and other mandatory safety requirements.
The operation will also involve strict enforcement against speeding, overloading, drunk driving, driver fatigue, and other traffic offences that endanger passengers.
In addition, authorities will conduct random checks on driving licences, Public Service Vehicle (PSV) badges, road service licences, and vehicle inspection certificates to ensure compliance with transport regulations.

NTSA also said it will step up public education campaigns to encourage motorists to observe road safety rules during the holiday period.
The authority urged parents, guardians, school transport operators, motorists, and the public to exercise caution, noting that increased travel during school closures raises the risk of road traffic crashes involving learners.
Members of the public have also been encouraged to report unsafe driving and incidents that put children at risk through police emergency lines, St. John’s Ambulance, the Kenya Red Cross, or the NTSA Incident Reporting Platform.

August Holiday
According to the Ministry of Education’s official 2026 school calendar for all basic learning institutions, the second term began on April 27, 2026, and will end on July 31, 2026.
Learners observed the second-term mid-term break from June 24 to June 28, before resuming classes on June 29, 2026.
Following the close of the second term, schools will break for the August holiday from August 3 to August 21, 2026. Learning will resume for the third term on August 24, 2026.
