The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) detained and subsequently charged 30 pedestrians today for failing to adhere to traffic regulations along Mombasa Road.
The arrests were made in response to numerous instances of pedestrians disregarding safety protocols, posing risks to themselves and motorists.
Emphasizing the importance of pedestrian safety, NTSA urged the public to utilize designated footbridges, walkways, and other designated crossing points.
By doing so, pedestrians can mitigate the risk of accidents and ensure smoother traffic flow along the busy thoroughfare.
NTSA Death Toll on Roads
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has released concerning statistics revealing that 384 pedestrians have lost their lives, making them the most vulnerable group of road users.
In response to this troubling trend, NTSA has escalated its Usalama Barabarani sensitization initiatives, particularly focusing on pedestrian safety.
Encouraging pedestrians to prioritize their safety, NTSA emphasizes the importance of utilizing available footbridges, walkways, and designated crossing points.

To further educate pedestrians on road safety practices, NTSA has been conducting extensive sensitization and mentorship programs nationwide.

“We have a collective responsibility in ensuring road safety is observed on all roads, and there is need for heightened vigilance to prevent avoidable loss of lives,” Murkomen said.
Global Road Death Toll Statistics
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1.35 million individuals succumb to road traffic crashes annually worldwide, with up to 50 million sustaining non-fatal injuries.
Shockingly, road traffic incidents rank as the leading cause of death among individuals aged 5–29 years, imposing significant socio-economic burdens on societies globally.
NTSA’s efforts align with Kenya’s commitment to the global road safety agenda, as articulated in the Draft National Road Safety Action Plan 2023-2027.

However, challenges persist, as evidenced by data from Nairobi, where only 24% of pedestrians utilize designated crosswalks, often due to safety concerns arising from drivers’ failure to yield.
NTSA’s role in educating pedestrians assumes paramount importance.
Through road safety mentorship programs and sensitization campaigns, NTSA endeavors to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate roads safely.
