What sounded like a casual speech by South Mugirango Member of Parliament Sylvanus Osoro has come back to haunt him.
In a clip that has since surfaced on social media, the Majority Whip in the National Assembly tried to calm a rowdy crowd in an event hosted by Bomet County MP Linet Toto.
Osoro, in the video, urged the people shouting amid his speech to keep quiet and promised to give them “something” in return.
In addition, Osoro appeared to brag about his deep pockets, citing his long stay in parliament and his position as the Majority Whip.
Further, he went on to demonstrate the practicality of his claim, alleging that MPs give him a token while seeking favors including approval of their trips abroad in his position as the whip.
“I will make you line up in the queue and each one of you will get something. I have been in parliament for a long time now,” said Osoro in the function in Bomet.
“I am the Chief whip; I am the leader for all these leaders. If they want to go abroad, I tell them to give me something and they can leave.”
Unknown to him, however, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was vigilant and took note of his sentiments.

Date with EACC
In a letter dated October 30, the EACC summoned Osoro to appear at its Integrity Center headquarters for interrogations about his remarks.
As per the Commission, Osoro’s allegations- if true- constitute serious ethical issues and would be a serious breach of the integrity and ethical requirements governing the conduct of State officer.
As such, the integrity commission urged Osoro to shed more light into his sentiments for determination.
In addition, EACC affirmed that it had launched investigations into the sentiments and allegations made by Osoro.
“The attention of the Commission has been drawn to utterances you made while in Bomet County during the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) event organized by Bomet Women Representative on 29th October 2023,” the EACC letter read in part.
Consequently, the South Mugirango MP will be required to appear at the Integrity Center in Nairobi on November 6 at 09:00 am.

Osoro, Ruto’s man
While at the EACC headquarters, Osoro will have a chance to shed light on the allegations and record a statement.
The MP was however yet to respond to the letter in public by the time of this publication. Currently, Osoro is a high-ranking MP both in the Kenya Kwanza and the 13th parliament.
After his active involvement in the Kenya Kwanza campaigns that saw President William Ruto clinch the presidency in 2022, Osoro rose to the position of Majority Whip, giving him control over the MPs in the Majority side.
