President Donald Trump appeared to doze off during a high-profile roundtable discussion in Memphis on March 23, drawing swift criticism and renewed scrutiny over his stamina amid ongoing national and international pressures.
The event, held at the Tennessee Air National Guard Base near Memphis International Airport, was intended to spotlight the achievements of the Memphis Safe Task Force, a federal-state-local initiative launched in late 2025 to curb violent crime in one of the nation’s highest-crime cities.
Trump arrived after departing from Florida, greeted by supporters and a crowd holding signs reading “Making America Safe Again.” He was joined by key administration figures, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.
The roundtable kicked off around noon local time (1 p.m. ET), with Trump initially addressing topics beyond the local crime focus.

According to live updates from local station FOX13 Memphis, he spent the first portion of his remarks discussing voter fraud allegations and the ongoing military conflict in Iran before pivoting to praise the task force.
White House officials have credited the effort with more than 7,000 arrests, including over 3,500 warrant executions, 700 gang members detained, 44 homicides linked to arrests, and nearly 1,200 guns seized since September.
Trump highlighted the results, declaring the program a success in restoring order. He also announced plans to tour Graceland afterward, expressing enthusiasm for Elvis Presley’s home:
“It’s known all over the world as the home to Graceland. You know I’m going to go see Graceland after this? … I love Elvis!”
However, moments during the discussion captured widespread attention online when video footage, shared by journalists and amplified on social media, appeared to show the 79-year-old president closing his eyes for extended periods, with his head nodding slightly, which critics described as falling asleep.

Clips circulated rapidly, prompting an account affiliated with anti-Trump Republicans to post: “Trump falls asleep in public again.” Other users shared similar observations, with one video compilation drawing comparisons to prior incidents in which Trump appeared drowsy in meetings.
The White House has not issued an immediate comment on the appearance of fatigue during the event.
Trump has previously dismissed similar claims in other settings, attributing closed eyes to boredom or brief rests rather than sleep, and emphasizing his high energy levels despite his age.
The Memphis visit occurred against a backdrop of domestic priorities and foreign challenges.
The task force represents one of Trump’s signature law-and-order pushes, with the president frequently citing crime reductions in targeted cities during public addresses, including his recent State of the Union.
