More than 1,000 government employees have been fired after a report by the Public Service Commission (PSC) revealed that they were illegally employed.
Governor Stephen Sang has said that the employees who were all from the Nandi County government, were illegally hired.
According to the governor, the individuals who are mostly relatives of top county officials, were illegally issued with employment letters and their names added to the payroll.
Moreover, the county public service board is in the process of revoking all employment letters that were issued irregularly and those affected will receive notification personally.
“We have started the process of implementing the report from the audit and those affected will be informed according to the laid down regulations,” he said.
The move follows a human resource audit by the Public Service Commission, which exposed the payroll scam.

Details of the Payroll Scam
According to PSC, the employees had in the past six years received a salary of Ksh2 billion.
This pushed the county wage bill to more than 75 per cent and leaving little resources for development.
Additionally, it caused the number of the county employees to increase to 4,430 yet it should not more than 3,000 workers.
According to the governor, some individuals in the Nandi County Public Service Board and the payroll unit have been colluding to issue irregular and fake appointment letters.
In some cases, the fraudulent employees rose four job groups in two years without any justification.
“All these irregularities led to issuance of fake appointment letters obtained through fraudulent means and which found their way into the payroll system,” Sang said.

Additionally, the governor has denied claims of the county government revealing details of the irregularly employed individuals.
He has warned that the documents being shared online are fake.
“It’s not authentic. Staff personal information and data are protected and can not be shared outside the provisions of law.”
Sang said the county government has referred the matter to the Director of Criminal Investigation for further action.
