Businessman Philip Aroko has been rearrested over the murder of Kasipul Members of Parliament, the late Charles Ong’ondo Were.
Aroko was arrested after a Kibera court canceled his bail on Monday, May 19, which had been granted during the ongoing investigations.
The businessman cum politician was initially released on a Ksh300,000 cash bail by a magistrate at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) court.
Additionally, as part of his bail conditions, he was barred from contacting family members, co-suspects, or anyone linked to the case.
However, the prosecution filed an appeal against his release.
Consequently, High Court Judge Diana Kavedza reviewed the case and ruled to revoke the bail, prompting police to track him down and rearrest him.

Why High Court Bail issued to Philip Aroko
The court noted that the lower court should have given police enough time to complete their investigations before granting bail to the respondent.
Moreover, it added that the prosecution’s request to hold Aroko for an additional seven days was both reasonable and proportionate, considering the complexity and seriousness of the case.
Therefore, the judge stated that the short restriction of Aroko’s freedom would have allowed investigators to finish their work without violating his constitutional rights.
“The upshot is that the application is found to be merited and the orders issued on May 16, 2025, by the Chief Magistrate’s Court at JKIA admitting him to cash bail are hereby set aside.
“The respondent, Phillip Nahashon Aroko, shall remain in lawful custody at Kileleshwa Police Station for a further period of seven days to allow the applicant to finalise investigations,” Judge Diana Kavedza ruled.
