Police Issue Safety Guidelines for Kenyans Visiting the Beach this Festive Season

The Coast Regional Commissioner, Rhoda Onyancha, has notified tourists planning to visit the coast region, of strategies employed to beef up security and ensure safety in the region as the festive season draws near. 

Rhoda stated that officers around the region are working together to ensure the safety of tourists.

“We have come up with strategies on how we are going to work with all other officers involved to ensure that we are securing our beaches,” said Rhoda.

She went on to assure both local and international tourists that there would be no cases of muggings and pickpocketing around the beach.

Safety is guaranteed around the beach and hotels

“When we have our local populace going to the beach and also our guests going to the beaches, we will have no issues of muggings or pickpocketing and ensuring that their property and everything that they have is secured,” added Rhoda.

She further advised tourists on how to ensure their personal safety, that of their families, and that of their belongings.

“For those who are going to the beaches we ask that even as you come with your families, it is always good to take care of your luggage and also to take care of the children,” added the commissioner.

The Coast Regional Commander, George Seda echoed the statement by the commissioner and guaranteed safety to tourists that will be residing in hotels around the region during the festive season.

“To the visitors that are going to reside in hotels, last week we had a meeting with the Kenya Coast Tourist Hotels Association where we came up with various strategies, we are going to adopt to ensure those areas are very safe,” said Seda.

The coastal region continues to be a leading tourist destination in Kenya. This is due to its beaches and cultural and wildlife attractions, including Lamu, Watamu, Diani, and Malindi.

In 2023, the Kenya Coast Tourist Association announced that hotels experienced a surge in occupancy during the festive season between November and December, with most of them having 70 to 80 percent occupancy.
