Police are investigating a perplexing security breach after a convicted robber named Alex Kibisu vanished from the Kibera law courts, where he had appeared for another case involving robbery with violence.
The escape, which happened around midday on Wednesday, 23 July, has left prison officers and court officials searching for answers.
Questions have been raised about how Kibisu managed to escape from the court’s holding cells, slip past all security officers, climb a perimeter wall, and disappear while in handcuffs.
Kibisu, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence at a community prison, was in court facing additional charges related to an armed robbery incident.
It is alleged that Kibisu shot and injured a victim, Duncan Sheamy, during a robbery at Akiba Estate in Langata on 30 November 2023.
How the Convict Escaped
It is believed that he escaped through the rear wall behind the court cell, which is normally monitored and secure.
Locals claim this leads directly into the maze-like structures of Kibera slums, making pursuit difficult.
Police units from the prison have reportedly set up camp in the informal settlements of Kibera as they try to track down Kibisu.
Investigators suspect the fugitive may have used a passage through the densely populated slum to vanish without detection.
Kibisu remains at large, and no official statement has been issued by the prison administration.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified their search amid growing public concern over possible lapses in supervision and accountability.
