Paul Mwangi is a Kenyan lawyer and political analyst known as the trusted legal advisor of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
He is renowned for his expertise in constitutional and political law. His name has also appeared in the media as a columnist, with over 1,600 articles.
Mwangi officially joined Odinga’s office in 2012 as Senior Legal Advisor, replacing Miguna Miguna.
Early Life and Education
He did his A-Level exams at Kagumo High School in 1985, where he emerged a top student, earning himself the prestigious Gandhi Smarat Nidhi Award for the most excellent performance.
He later joined the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
Career background and working with Raila Odinga
Mwangi was identified in 2011 as a possible replacement for Miguna Miguna as senior legal advisor. He took the role and started working with him in 2012.

When Raila Odinga died in October 2025, he had worked with him for 14 years. He worked closely with the former Prime Minister, being his trusted and confidant lawyer. His roles included:

In 2022, Mwangi, alongside Siaya Governor James Orengo, Pheroze Nowrojee, Philip Murgor, Okong’o Omogeni, and Willis Otieno, led Odinga and the Azimio la Umoja Coalition’s petition that sought to nullify the 2022 election results.

Before joining Odinga’s office, Mwangi was a political analyst and columnist. He was part of the Citizen TV panel on its political commentary show, hosted by Julie Gichuru on Sundays, where they discussed matters related to the succession of the late president Mwai Kibaki- among other topics.
During this period, he built a profile as a commentator on political and social matters, which ultimately led to his recruitment into the Prime Minister’s office.
Mwangi is also a prolific writer, having published over 1,600 articles in the Daily Nation on topics such as governance, law, politics, and social affairs.
He has authored the book Black Bar: Corruption and Political Intrigues within Kenya’s Legal Fraternity, which exposes corruption in the judiciary.
When Raila passed on October 25, Mwangi described him as a confident person and someone who would walk and cry fighting for justice,
“His rule number one was to keep moving. Even after defeat, he never whined. Each time we left Bomas, the next day there would be a meeting to prepare a petition. Walking and working with Raila, you learnt how to cry and walk at the same time,” said Mwangi.
