A protester who was presumed dead after being hit by a teargas canister and presumed dead during the anti-government protests on Tuesday, July 16, protests is alive.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, 27-year-old Kevin Luvega narrated how he survived the shooting incident.
CCTV cameras captured Kevin being shot along Moi Avenue in Nairobi CBD as demonstrators were running from the police.
In the footage, Kevin is seen falling to the ground after being hit by what many on social media presumed to be a bullet.
He fell on the concrete and there was blood oozing from his face.
After a short while, a crowd forms around him and later rushed him to a nearby hospital.
Protestor Narrates How He Survived Bullet
Kevin, a well-known parking attendant operating around the Dedan Kimathi Street in Jamia mosque area said he was among the protestors on Tuesday.
“There is a police officer who I didn’t see very well who lobbed a teargas. I fell down and I was unconscious. One part of my eyes was injured, and I got confused. People came and took me to the hospital,” he said.
Kevin who was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) said it took three hours before he was attended to.
“We sat there for a while, there were too many and it was difficult to be attended to. There is only one woman who helped us because I was bleeding profusely. I was made to lay on one of the beds and told to relax. I slept there feeling unconscious, my legs were very cold,” he said.

No Medicine at KNH
His wife Emelda Tunya said she was in shock after receiving the news stating that he was not given any medicine at KNH.
“Waliniandikia madawa nikauliza dawa hatupewi huku wakasema hapana tutaenda kununua nje,” Tunya said.
This translates to, “They prescribed medicine for him and I asked if we are not given medicine and they said no, we will and buy it outside.”
Kevin and his wife appealed to the police to stop using force on peaceful protestors.

53 Killed in Gen Z Demos
Three more people were shot during the nationwide anti-government protests on Tuesday, July 16.
One person shot dead in Kitengela, Kajiado County while two people have also been reported dead after being shot by police officers during protests in Kibwezi, Makueni County.
Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said Tuesday killings pushed the total number of deaths to 53 since the demonstrations began in June.
KNCHR also recorded 82 more injuries, taking the number to 574. There were 77 more arrests, pushing the tally to 1,201 since the protests began.
