Lang’ata Member of Parliament (MP) Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o has honored the late Rex Masai by holding a candlelight memorial for him.
In a social media post on June 23, Jalas revealed that Rex was one of his constituents and conveyed condolences to his family.
The legislator also pledged to support the family during this difficult time.
“Rex Rest! Lang’ata constituency mourns one of our own. Rex lived in Highrise ward, Canan apartments. Tonight, we will light candles for Rex, praying that the family gets grace in this hard time. We will support the family at this very hard time,” he said.
Speaking at the City Mortuary, Rex’s mother revealed that she received the news of her son being shot at around 7 pm on that fateful day but he was already dead when she got to the CBD.
She mentioned that her son was on his way home from work when he got caught in the melee in town during the Thursday, June 20 anti-finance bill protests.

Kenyans Fundraise Over 2M for Rex Masai’s Burial
After news of his death, a section of Kenyans on social media rallied to generate funds for the funeral arrangements.
As of Sunday, June 23 evening netizens had raised over 2M for the burial of Rex Masai and Evans who also died following the demonstrations.
In a fundraiser drive on M-changa titled “Our Brothers Rex and Evans”, Kenyans raised over 2.4 million in just 8 hours.
Likewise, through a post on social media, activist Hanifa Farsafi stated that Masai’s death was not in vain as he died while fighting for a better future.
The fundraiser came after Farsafi pledged to honor Rex by printing posters terming him a hero and to cover his burial expenses
“We will print posters with Rex’s face and name around Nairobi terming him as a hero we will cover the burial expenses as well my heart is absolutely broken maaan, but it was not in vain,” she said.

Rex Masai
Rex Kanyike Masai, succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained while on his way home from work during the Finance Bill 2024 protests.
An autopsy conducted at the City Mortuary by government pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed that Rex died due excessive blood loss caused by a gunshot wound to the left thigh.
“The young man shot while demonstrating died due to excessive bleeding and muscle fractures caused by one gunshot wound on the left thigh.”
“The bullet entered from the back and exited, probably he was shot while running away,” said Dr. Oduor.
Present during the exercise was Rex’s family, Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and Haki Africa, a Pan-African human rights organization.
In an update issued on Saturday, June 22, IPOA confirmed that different investigative teams are following up on Rex Masai’s shooting case.
The Authority mentioned that one team is in the process of identifying and confirming the suspected officer who allegedly shot Masai.
“Another team from IPOA is in the process of identifying and confirming the suspected officer,” read the update in part.
