The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has given an update on the investigations of the shooting and death of Rex Masai.
In a statement dated July 23, the ODPP said it received four files and accompanying reports from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) related to deaths and injuries during the protests witnessed across various parts of the country including that of Rex.
ODPP said the investigations show that Rex’s relatives identified the body for postmortem.
However, the ODPP explained that the CCTV footage believed to have captured the shooting incident does not clearly show the alleged police officer who shot Rex Masai.
“The CCTV footage showing the shooting does not clearly identify the person who pulled the trigger,” said the ODPP.
Appeal to Witnesses
Further, the Office stated that the people who took Rex to the hospital together with those who were with him during the shooting have not recorded their statements.
“The people who took Rex Masai to hospital have not come forward to record statements, including the key witness who was with the deceased during the shooting and who informed the deceased’s parents after the incident occurred,” the statement read.
The ODPP urged people who witnessed Rex’s shooting and those who took him to the hospital to record their statement with IPOA.
“I call upon any person with information pertaining to this case especially the witnesses who took the deceased to hospital and those who witnessed the shooting to come forward and record a statement with IPOA,” added another part of the statement.

IPOA’s Plea
This comes after IPOA issued similar calls regarding Rex Masai’s tragic shooting on June 20, 2024.
IPOA had also urged witnesses to provide any information that can help in the investigations and arrest of the suspect.
In a statement on June 24, IPOA urged witnesses to step forward and record their statement stating that the information will help in investigating the incident.
The Agency said their information will contribute to police accountability and help bring closure to Rex’s family and friends.
“IPOA calls upon anybody who may have witnessed the fatal shooting of Mr. Rex Masai on 20th June 2024 to come forth and volunteer information to advance its investigations. To offer information, you can call toll free through 1559 (free of charge) or 0204906000,” IPOA noted,” reads part of the statement.
