A senior Russian military official, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, was killed in a car explosion in Balashikha, a city near Moscow, on Friday, April 25, 2025.
The explosion occurred when a remotely controlled device planted in a parked vehicle detonated as Moskalik passed by.

“The explosive device had a force equivalent to more than 300 grams of TNT,” spokesperson of the Investigative Committee of Russia Svetlana Petrenko, said.
The blast resulted in a fiery explosion, and Russian authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident. General-lieutenant Yaroslav Moskalik, aged 59, served as the deputy head of the Russian Armed Forces’ main operations directorate.

Russian General Killed in Car Explosion
According to reports by local media, an improvised explosive device (IED), packed with pellets, detonated inside a parked Volkswagen Golf near his residence in Balashikha, an eastern suburb of Moscow.
Additionally, videos and photos circulating on Telegram show the car in flames outside a block of flats in Balashikha.

The bombing comes amid heightened diplomatic efforts, as US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for crucial talks in Moscow later on Friday.
The car bomb attack in Moscow, which killed General Yaroslav Moskalik, is not the first time Russian military figures have been targeted since the war began.

Previous Attacks on Military Figures
According to France24, the assassination of General Yaroslav Moskalik appears to mirror previous attacks attributed to Ukraine, targeting figures associated with Russia’s ongoing offensive.
Last year in December, Ukraine’s secret services claimed responsibility for the assassination of the head of Russia’s chemical weapons department, who was killed by a remotely operated bomb attached to a scooter as he left his apartment in Moscow.
However, after the December killing of Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s chemical weapons department, President Vladimir Putin made a rare admission of failings within his powerful security agencies.
