President William Ruto has revealed his first ever form of employment and job while highlighting the struggles of being unemployed as a university graduate.
President Ruto revealed that his first job was when he successfully ran for a Member of Parliament seat for the current Eldoret North Constituency as a young politician back in 1992.
Ruto made the revelation on May 10, 2024, during the launch of the Call Centre International (CCI) Global Contact Centre, Tatu City in Kiambu County.
The head of State made the remarks while highlighting the importance of the CCI facility and the opportunities it shall provide for young people.
“I understand very well what it means not to have a job. The first time I ever got a job was when I was elected as a Member of Parliament. That’s the first job” said Ruto amid laughter from the youth.
“So, I know what it means not to have a job because I actually didn’t have a job until I decided to run for Member of Parliament.”

The Head of State, while explaining why the government is creating opportunities for the youth through digital jobs, further urged the youth to take them up, highlighting that not everyone can be elected as an MP like him because of the limited number of slots.

“I know what it means when we have hundreds of thousands of young people who are out of school who are out of college and university, and they don’t have an opportunity to work. Use this opportunity well and make us proud because when you do well you encourage companies to come onboard,” added Ruto.
According to the Head of State, the companies present at the event had the capacity to hire about three hundred thousand Kenyans.
He underscored the government’s plan to create one million jobs by 2027, noting that his administration had laid down a robust foundation to achieve this through the expansion of fiber networks, Wi-Fi connections and digital hubs nationwide
Ruto further stated that the government is keen on creating opportunities in other sectors such as housing, exportation of labor and many other areas.
