Why Mother’s Day is Celebrated
People celebrate Mother’s Day to honor mothers, as well as to celebrate motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in the society.
The day is filled with traditions such as holding brunches, gifting flowers and showing appreciation for mothers for their work and influence in their children’s lives.
Many countries celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, influenced by a tradition originating in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century.
The concept of dedicating a day to honor mothers first emerged in the US through the efforts of Virginia activist and writer Ann Jarvis.
She advocated for the establishment of a special day to express gratitude for the vital role mother’s play. Following Ann’s death, her daughter, also named Anna Jarvis, continued to champion the idea of commemorating Mother’s Day.
