President William Ruto has announced a massive student housing program for students across the country. Speaking to members of Friends Church (Quakers) at State House, Nairobi, on August 3, Ruto said the government is building hostels with a combined capacity of 180,000 students across universities, TVET institutions, and Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTCs).
As part of the initiative, the president revealed that the government has allocated KSh550 million to construct a new hostel at Kaimosi, which will accommodate 1,200 students.
“At Kaimosi, we are constructing a hostel that will accommodate 1,200 students, and we have invested KSh550 million in the project. We are also building student hostels with capacity for 180,000 learners across universities, TVET institutions and Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTCs).”
Ruto Explains How Housing Projects Create Jobs for Kenyan Youths
Ruto said government housing projects are creating employment opportunities for young people through ongoing construction works across the country.
He said the construction of student hostels in universities, TVET institutions and Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTCs) is providing jobs while expanding accommodation for learners.
Ruto added that the government’s Affordable Housing Program has so far created more than 800,000 jobs for young people involved in various stages of the projects.

According to the President, the housing initiatives are designed to address infrastructure needs while generating employment and supporting economic activity across the country.
Ruto Hosts 5,000 Quaker Church Members at State House
President Ruto on Monday, August 3, 2026, hosted about 5,000 members of the Friends Church (Quakers) at State House, Nairobi, during a meeting attended by church leaders from across the country.
The delegation was led by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, a member of the Friends Church, making the gathering politically significant.
Photos shared from the event showed thousands of worshippers arriving at State House early in the morning, with many braving the cold weather to attend the President’s invitation.

This meeting brought together church leaders and members of the Friends Church, one of Kenya’s largest Protestant denominations, for an engagement hosted by the Head of State.
Friends Church (Quakers)
The Friends Church (Quakers) is one of the largest and most influential Christian denominations in Western Kenya. It has a strong presence across Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Trans Nzoia and neighboring counties, while also having a sizeable following among people from the region living in other parts of Kenya.
It sponsors several educational institutions across Western Kenya, with many of them bearing the “Friends” name. Among the most notable are Friends School Kamusinga and Friends School Chavakali.
It also sponsors Kaimosi Friends University College, located in Kaimosi in Vihiga County, where the church’s headquarters in Kenya are based.
