Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has pleaded with Kenyans to stop politicizing the death of Nairobi Member of County Assembly (MCA) of Kariobangi North, Joel Munuve, who was in the process of collecting signatures to impeach him before he died.
Appearing on Citizen TV on Wednesday, April 24, 2025, the Nairobi Governor wondered why a section of Kenyans is linking the death of the MCA to murder, yet he collapsed at home.
“Allow me to pass my deepest and sincere condolences to the people of Kariobangi North who lost their MCA, Joel Munuve. He collapsed at home. I don’t know why you call it murder.
Death is not something we can play with or politicize,” said the governor.
Sakaja – Stop Politicizing the MCA’s Death
At the same time, Sakaja said that he is waiting for an autopsy to be conducted to unravel what happened to the MCA.
“We have asked for a full investigation to understand what happened. I don’t think he had a history of illness,” the Nairobi Governor said.

Additionally, the Nairobi Governor said he has been in talks with the family of the late MCA, particularly his brother, since he died and has promised that his administration will support the family.
Moreover, the Nairobi Governor reiterated that full investigations should be conducted to unearth what happened to assuage fears of political speculation.
Leaders Call for Thorough Probe on Joel Munuve’s Death
Since Joel Munuve died on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, various leaders have called for a thorough probe into his death, noting that he had no history of illness prior to his death.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated that it is painful that Joel Munuve, MCA, died in unclear circumstances while advocating for accountability and reason in the management of public resources and championing for the unheard.
“He was a strong, independent voice and called for accountability and strong leadership that is impermeable to corruption and irresponsibility.
I pass my deepest sympathies to his immediate family, to the people of Kariobangi North, and the County Assembly of Nairobi,” Gachagua stated.
On his part, Dagoretti South Member of Parliament John Kiarie noted that the MCA’s death is indeed a curious one.
“The death of Honourable Joel Munuve is a curious death, especially at a time he was raising very pertinent issues about the leadership and the current affairs. Only three days before his death, the MCA dared to collect signatures for the impeachment of the governor of Nairobi City County,” Dagoretti South MP said.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino warned that any attempt to interfere with a thorough and impartial investigation into the unfortunate death of the MCA will be met with severe resistance from Nairobi residents and the entire nation.
Munuve had initiated a signature collection campaign starting around December 2023. He accused Sakaja of corruption, incompetence, and poor service delivery, including issues like delays in bursary disbursements and questionable revenue collection practices.
Just days before his death on April 22, 2025, Munuve announced plans to resume collecting signatures for Sakaja’s impeachment. On April 19, 2025, he made allegations about financial mismanagement in the county’s Dishi na County school feeding program, which sparked significant debate.
