A form two student has died after falling into a septic tank at Friends School Kamusinga. The Board of Management (B.O.M) chairman confirmed the incident on September 16, 2024, in a statement.
The student is said to have fallen into the septic tank and retrieved in the afternoon.
Upon retrieval, the student was rushed to Kimilili Sub-County Hospital and was referred to Life Care Hospital for further management. The student was pronounced dead at 7.00pm while being attended to at the hospital.
Part of the statement from the B.O.M chairman reads, “We convened an executive B.O.M meeting at 8.00am on 16/9/2024. Meanwhile investigation by the Ministry of Education and Interior are ongoing.”
“The executive team joined the staff in addressing the students. There is relative calm in the school. As a board we have resolved that safety and security measures be addressed in school,” added the B.O.M chairman.
The chairman has conveyed his condolences to the family on behalf of the students, staff and the Board of Management as they anticipate holding a B.O.M meeting in soon to consider the incident.

History of Friends School Kamusinga
Friends School Kamusinga, located in Kimilili town near Mt. Elgon, is a government boys’ boarding school with 1,200 students and a staff of approximately 75 teachers. Established in 1956 by Allan Bradley as a transfer unit from Friends School Kaimosi in Vihiga County, the school honors his legacy annually on “Allan Bradley’s Day.”
The school is renowned for its academic and sporting achievements, driven by innovative programs and strong alumni connections. Notable former principals include Mr. Christopher Khaemba, who later became a distinguished principal of Alliance High School.

Currently, he serves as the Cabinet Executive Commitee Member for Education and Youth Affairs in Nairobi County.
Amb. Simon Nabukwesi was another key figure principal in the school, who served as Kenya’s Ambassador to Canada and Cuba and currently serves as the Principal Secretary for the State Department of University Education and Research in Kenya’s Ministry of Education. The position he has held since February 28, 2022.
Under the leadership of the two, Friends School Kamusinga has reached significant milestones and continues to excel.
Recent deaths in schools
The case at Kamusinga school came on the back of rising deaths and safety concerns reported in various schools in the country, with the recent one being the fire incident at Hillside Endarasha School in Nyeri county where fire erupted in a dormitory killing over 17 students.
School fires in Kenya have raised concerns in the recent past after a series of infernos reported across the country. These incidents underscore the importance of stringent safety protocols and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies.
