The Kenya High School ranks among the top national public girls’ Secondary schools in Kenya.
The learning institution, which was established in 1910, was formerly known as the Nairobi European School.
It began in buildings designed for police Barracks, which consisted partly of temporary wooden huts located on the compound of the present Nairobi Primary school, with which the secondary school shared the present buildings.
In 1931, the boys were separated from the girls and the school was renamed The European Girls Secondary School in 1932, with its first Headmistress, Miss Kerby, appointed.
The school was renamed The Kenya High School in 1939 and was later acquired by the Kenyan government in 1974 when it began to take more African pupils and teachers.
Kenya High School history
The first African headmistress was Mrs. R. Kariuki, who took over from Miss Barnes in January 1977 and left in July of the same year after handing over the school to Mrs. M. W. Wanjohi on 22nd July 1977, to August 1999.
After Mrs. Wanjohi’s retirement in September 1999, Rosemary Saina took over from September 1999 to July 2015.
She then handed over to the Deputy Lucy Mugendi, who stayed up to December 31, 2015, before she handed over to Flora Mulatya, who also handed over to the current Chief Principal, MS. Virginia Wahome.
The Kenya High School remains one of the best girls’ schools in the country to date. It enrolls girls from all regions of Kenya, drawn from diverse backgrounds, and provides an opportunity for them to live together in harmony and unity.

School Fees
The government has previously issued a directive to all institutions regarding the total fees parents should pay per year.
Under new rules introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Kenya High School was placed in Cluster Three, meaning the total annual fees per student at the institution are approximately Ksh75,798, which serves as the fee cap for Cluster Three national secondary schools.
However, the total fees may vary from school to school due to additional expenses introduced by respective institutions, such as uniforms, motivation fees, and extra activities.
Some schools charge parents/guardians a high of Ksh100,000 annually.
