Motorists traveling into Nairobi faced heavy traffic on several major roads on the morning of October 4, with Thika Road recording severe congestion during the early stages of the morning commute.
At around 6:28 am, a live traffic update showed a major buildup along Thika Road towards Nairobi, stretching from Kasarani towards Utalii, Muthaiga and Pangani Interchange.
The congestion was particularly heavy around the Muthaiga Interchange, with traffic already forming a major blockage.
Thika Road Among Other Roads Affected
A live traffic-map assessment also showed heavy congestion around Nairobi Railway Station and the city center, around the CBD.
Jogoo Road was also recording heavy traffic, while Outer Ring Road and parts of the Eastern Bypass had significant congestion.
Other affected areas included sections of Ngong Road, Lavington and Waiyaki Way, while congestion was also visible around Parklands, State House and the University of Nairobi area.
On the southern side of the city, motorists were encountering scattered congestion around Langata and sections of the Southern Bypass.

Roads Still Moving
Juja Road recorded relative movement towards the CBD compared to Thika Road as traffic around Jogoo Road near Makadara began to build up but remained manageable.
Roads around Nairobi Hospital were also moving well, while Upper Hill had only a gradual buildup towards the CBD.
Traffic around Gikomba Market was similarly increasing slowly.
The Outer Ring Road was initially reported to be moving well in the early morning update, before heavier congestion hit parts of the route later.
Alternative Travel Routes Connecting to Nairobi
Motorists from Ruiru, Githurai and Roysambu can use Kiambu Road and connecting routes, including Kamiti Road, to access Nairobi through Muthaiga, Ngara or Pangani.
Those traveling from Thika, Ruiru or Juja can consider the Eastern Bypass and Kangundo Road.
The Northern Bypass provides another option for motorists coming from the northern and north-western suburbs, with connections towards Kiambu Road.
For motorists heading west, Waiyaki Way can be used while Lower Kabete Road and Peponi Road offer alternatives around congested sections of Lavington.
Nyayo Stadium to CBD
Motorists traveling from Nyayo Stadium to Nairobi CBD can use Uhuru Highway as the most direct route.
Alternative routes include Lusaka Road and roads through South C and Madaraka, depending on the prevailing traffic situation.
Motorists with access to the Nairobi Expressway can also use the highway to bypass some surface congestion and exit closer to their destination.

Ongoing Road Works
Traffic in parts of Nairobi is also being affected by ongoing road construction and drainage works.
Recent reports indicate construction activity along sections of Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, Murang’a Road, Outer Ring Road and Museum Hill Road.
From October 8 to November 7, the Mombasa-bound lanes of Waiyaki Way between Kempinski and Museum Hill will also be partially closed.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Waiyaki Way (A8 Road) between Kempinski and Museum Hill Interchange on the Mombasa-bound lanes will be partially closed temporarily from Thursday, October 8, 2026 to Saturday, November 7, 2026,” stated KeNHA on October 1.
Alternatives include James Gichuru–State House Road–Uhuru Highway and Limuru Road via Westlands and Pangani.
The Mombasa Road section at Cabanas remains partially closed on the JKIA-bound side at the Eastern Bypass off-ramp. KeNHA said the restriction took effect on September 17, 2026, and will run until October 22, 2026, to facilitate construction of a box drain.
Motorists from Outer Ring Road, Donholm, Pipeline, Fedha, and Embakasi can use Airport North Road, while those from Eastlands and Kangundo Road can connect through Outer Ring Road and Airport North Road.
Other options include Jogoo Road–Enterprise Road/Likoni Road and the Southern Bypass–Ole Sereni route.
Meanwhile, the closure of Eldoret Road has been extended to December 30, 2026, as KURA continues construction of a vehicular bridge across the Nairobi River.
The Mlolongo-Kamulu (Quarry Road) disruption runs from October 1 to December 1, with Syokimau-Katani Road and Syokimau-Parliament Road designated for light and medium vehicles, and Tufoam Road for heavy commercial vehicles.
