During his State of the Union Address on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of plotting to create nuclear weapons.
Despite previously boasting about the US strikes that were aimed at destroying Iran’s nuclear program, Trump claims that Iran is building missiles to destroy the US.
“They have already developed weapons that can threaten Europe and our bases overseas, and they are working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America,” Trump stated.
Trump stated that there is an ongoing negotiation with Iran, but the Middle Eastern country has not assured that it will not pursue nuclear weapon production.
Iran has been warned against attempting to develop any nuclear weapons or to make any threat against the US.
In addition, Tehran was warned against making any future attempts to rebuild its weapons program and nuclear weapons.
“We wiped it out, and they want to start all over again and are, at this moment, again pursuing their sinister ambitions,” Trump commented.
“My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy. But one thing is certain, I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon.”
Iran’s Response to Trump
In a statement on Wednesday, February 25, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that Iran will under no circumstances ever develop a nuclear weapon, contradicting the accusation made by Trump.
Abbas echoed that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports found no evidence of weapon-grade diversion in Iran as of now.
He, however, mentioned that the US has no right to demand that the Iran has zero nuclear weapons in their possession.
Additionally, he added that Iran maintains stability and does not violate the established principles of the NPT.

IAEA Monitoring Role
The IAEA tracks declared quantities of nuclear material, inventory changes, and movements for accountancy purposes.
Additionally, the IAEA conducts physical inspections of sites containing nuclear materials for sampling and analysis.
The IAEA’s monitoring role is technical, impartial, and verification-focused, and it has no power to impose sanctions or policies.

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)
The NPT is a landmark international treaty aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology.
It established a safeguards system under the responsibility of the IAEA to further the goal and the treaty measures.
NPT is based on three pillars: non-proliferation, disarmament, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The Treaty promotes cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear technology and equal access to this technology for all States parties.
